John has been an avid photographer since 1979. Since retiring from the Tennessee Valley Authority Office of the General Counsel in 2013, John has operated Kernodle.Photography as a "hobby business" focusing mostly on motorsports photography.
Since 2016, John has been photographing for the International GT racing series (IGT) that includes The Mission Foods GT3 Cup Trophy, The Stuttgart Cup, and The Maranello Cup championships for contemporary Porsche and Ferrari GT race cars. IGT races take place at legendary road courses all over the United States. The series usually shares race weekends with the SportsCar Vintage Racing Association, and sometimes the professional TransAm series and other SCCA pro series, giving John the opportunity to photograph a variety of vintage, historic, and modern racing cars.
John holds a Photography Certificate from the University of Tennessee. He is a member of the Professional Photographers of America (PPA), the American Society of Photographers (ASP), the Tennessee Professional Photographers Association (TNPPA), and Professional Photographers of Middle Tennessee (PPMT). Prior to moving to Franklin, TN in 2022, John was a member of the Professional Photographers of East Tennessee (PPETN).
John constantly strives to improve his photography through image salons and other photo competitions. He has won won awards in PPA, TNPPA, PPETN, Southern Appalachian Nature Photographers (SANP), and Wilderness Wildlife Week competitions
Based on the awards won by his motorsports and other images in Tennessee professional competition, John received a Tennessee Certified Degree from TNPPA and has been a TNPPA Tennessee Top Ten Photographer for the last five years in a row (2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022).
The success of his motorsports images in PPA's International Photo Competition has included having one image selected to PPA's Showcase Collection and five images selected to PPA's Imaging Excellence Collection, a Gold Award, and earning his Master of Photography Degree.
John’s motorsports photography has been published in the magazines Vintage Racing Quarterly, SpeedTour Quarterly, Cars & Parts, and SportsCar.
